Should Your Parents Try CBD? The Facts
Posted by Hilary Famolare on Aug 4th 2022
If you take CBD products and know the benefits, you may know someone in your life who could benefit from CBD. But, unsurprisingly, 35% of parents believe CBD is the same as marijuana, so this may take some convincing.
However, if you can overcome that initial obstacle, you could help your parents or relatives experience the full benefits of CBD products. So, let’s talk about the benefits of CBD for aging parents and how to choose the right products for them!
What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant, but it is entirely different from THC, the compound associated with the “high” from marijuana. Instead, CBD attaches to our brains’ natural cannabinoid receptors, which has recently shown promising health benefits in numerous studies.
For the first time, the FDA approved a CBD-based medicine for a rare and untreatable seizure disorder, even though CBD is classified as a Schedule I drug at the federal level. The evidence of its medicinal power was too powerful to overlook, and seizures aren’t the only health benefits experts have their eyes on!

Benefits of CBD For Aging
Remember that most of these benefits still require more research to confirm. However, research on CBD’s benefits is incredibly promising. Here are some of the most important examples as they apply to elderly parents!
Joint Pain
Joint pain or discomfort are common symptoms of aging, as conditions like arthritis worsen with age. CBD can help reduce arthritis symptoms, inflammation, and joint pain in many patients. We recommend using a topical cream on the affected area to isolate the benefits to one area. However, oral ingestion can still have similar effects.
Muscle Discomfort
CBD is widely believed to help with sore, stiff, or uncomfortable muscles. In addition, CBD has anti-inflammatory and relaxative properties that can help soothe tight muscles, which is very helpful for aging adults.
Reducing or Preventing Alzheimer’s
This is a bold claim, but some studies suggest that CBD can reduce the symptoms or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, CBD is known to help improve cognitive functions without risk, so it is worth a shot for aging parents!
Improving Sleep
Quality of sleep is essential for aging adults as it can help improve cognitive functions, ease discomfort, and delay the onset of dementia. CBD is widely used for insomnia or simply improving your sleep quality without any sedative properties. This means you won’t have to worry about feeling groggy in the morning or after taking a CBD product, and it will also be safe to drive after taking it, unlike most sleep medications!
Cancer Risk Reduction
While more research is needed, some studies suggest that regular use of CBD can help reduce the growth of cancer cells. For aging adults, this is arguably the most important potential benefit on this list!
Reducing Nausea
For cancer patients or sick loved ones, CBD products could be a great way to reduce nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms. In addition, CBD is a great natural alternative (with little to no risks) to medicines that often come with heavy side effects.

Which CBD Products Are Best For Parents?
Honestly, the answer to this is based on personal preference. While gummies and drinks may seem more appealing for younger markets, your parents might love them! However, some may prefer using a dropper to control the quantity, some may prefer to cook with CBD, and others may want to use CBD flower.
Regardless of the product type, just ensure your parents are using products from reputable sources. Older users should especially stick to CO2-extracted CBD rather than butane-extracted CBD or products with added chemicals. From there, your decision is only a matter of taste!

Finding the Right Dose
Nobody has ever died or experienced a major health complication from a CBD overdose. If you go over the recommended dose a little, you’re only wasting the product you paid for. It’s still best to avoid overdoing it, simply to prevent some adverse side effects from occurring.
On the other hand, taking too little can result in your parents not seeing any results and giving up. Therefore, we recommend starting with a CBD oil and dropper to control their dosage, starting small, and working up until they begin to see results. For parents with chronic pain, try using a topical cream in lighter doses and working your way up until pain or discomfort begins to alleviate.
CBD Dosing Guidelines
For the average adult, we’d recommend starting with 15mg twice daily and adjusting as you see fit. 15mg may be enough for some people, and it’s easy to increase by 5mg with a dropper or low-dosage edibles!
Timing is also important. Generally, we recommend once in the morning around breakfast and once in the evening, a few hours before bed. This can help improve sleep and allow you to enjoy the full benefits throughout the day!
